Blood Donation Campaign 4 December 2011

As our PP Ong KS has repeatedly said, we, the RC Sri Petaling has been very busy lately, with many projects lined up till the end of last year. One of those projects, namely the Blood Donation Campaign, was one that we specially planned for the Sri Petaling community.

The blood donation drive was held on the 4th December 2011 at The Store at Sri Petaling. It started off a bit later than planned, but nevertheless, the crowd catched on quickly to make up for the loss time. By 11:00am, the donors had already lined up at the registration counter. Very soon, we realized the chairs were not even enough for the crowd to sit and wait for their turn. We have to apologise for that.

Many of the experienced donors came prepared. They knew exactly what to expect and patiently waiting for their turn. There were also many "freshies" who experience the joy of giving, in this case, to save lives. Whoever they were, they all came in with big hearts. Thank you!

We were expecting a turn up of 40 to 50 donors, but that mark had been breached by lunch time. The crowd was building up at the registration counter and we had to do some last minute adjustment to the registration and screening procedures in order to make the wait a little more pleasant.

The doctors, nurses and technicians from the National Blood Bank were working through lunch, until we insisted that they take a break. They took turns to have their very short lunch breaks, but that did not disrupt the whole operation because they covered for one another. Good job!

The whole blood donation drive was supposed to end at 5:00pm, but there were always surprises. The response had been so good that all the storage boxes have been filled to the brim by 4:00pm. Without the ice boxes, blood donated would be wasted. So we had to reluctantly stopped the campaign at about 4:30pm. As much as we hated to, we had to turn away donors who came in "late". At the end of the day, we collected 72 packets of life-saving blood!

It was another well-done project, thanks to all the members, spouses, Interactors from SMK Sri Saujana, and all the general public who walked in to support and to donate blood. We were overwhelmed by your unselfish act!

FINAL UPDATE: 1 MILLION BOTTLES OF DRINKING WATER TO THAILAND FLOOD VICTIMS

The fund raising exercise to buy 1 million bottles of drinking water to the Thailand flood victims has been successfully completed. With our Project OC PE Amus Loo handing over the last batch of donation ( RM5030.00) over to DGN Sanguan Kunaporn of D3330 on the 15 December 2011 in Hatyai, Thailand, the whole event has finally come to an end.

In total, Rotary Club of Sri Petaling has collected RM20,030.00. Raising this amount in such a short period is a true reflection of how loving and caring our donors are. A big SALUTE to all the donors and, on behalf of all the flood victims in Thailand who benefited from your generosity, RC Sri Petaling would like to express our greatest gratitude to you. THANK YOU!

The Passing Away of Our Past President Henry Soh

The members of the Rotary Club of Sri Petaling are at a lost of words on the sudden demise of our Past President Henry Soh Kok Kiong on the 24th November 2011 in Brunei. May his soul rest in peace.

His remain will be placed at Xiao En Centre today 1 December 2011. There will be a prayer at 7pm on 1 December 2011 (Thursday) and another prayer at 9 am on 2 December 2011 (Friday). The funeral will begin at 11 am on 2 December 2011, proceeding to Nilai Memorial Park.

Dear All,

This is the latest news from Rotary Clubs of South Thailand who organized the " 1 Million Bottle drinking water" to the Bangkok Flood disaster victims project.

They had send out 40,000 bottles drinking water yesterday and will be arrived in Bangkok tomorrow.

Rotary Club Of Sri Petaling has transferred in total of around 150,000.00 Thai Bath (RM15,000.00) to the organizer chair person District Governor Nominee Mr Sanguan to support this meaningful project and we are really appreciate to all of you who help to raise the above mentioned fund.

We will keep on the fund raising and hopefully more fund will come in within this 2 weeks.

Donation for “1 million Bottles” Rotary drinking water to Thai Flood victims 2011

Recently, the worst flood disaster has hit Thailand and everyone is short of clean drinking water. To make matter worse, the large water bottle manufacturers in Bangkok have been hard hit and would take a period of time before they can resume their production. However, those manufacturers in Districts that are unaffected have pooled their resources and have agreed to produce 600cc bottles of water with Rotary Logo with words of “1 million bottles” Rotary water to supply to those in need.

As such, as partners with our Rotary sister & friendship Club in Thailand, we have embarked on a campaign to raise the money for this “1 million Bottles.” We need your contribution to ease the shortage of drinking water in the flood hit areas.
Every Ringgit contributed will be given to our Thai Rotary Counterpart and a receipt will be issued from us to show that we are accountable for the funds coming in.

Give generously for a good cause.

I just run into this movie clip that touches me for three reasons.

First of all, it happens in Fresno California, a place where I spent my 4 years during my study, it brought back many memories of that town, where the downtown is full of poor migrant workers from Mexico and S E Asia..

Secondly I realised my ex college mate, Steven Voon is the coordinator of the medical programme, as far as I know, he travels with the Tsu Chi medical team to many places like Haiti, and other part of the world to provide medical attention to the needy. Most important of all, he is our fellow Malaysian from KKB who has settled down in Fresno now.

Thirdly, the dedication of the volunteers and their desire to serve really inspire me.

Spend a few minutes to see and feel the joy of serving!

Our Inter-country Health Camp 2011 A Huge Success!

The Inter-country Health Camp 2011 held on the 15 January 2011 at Seri Kembangan Civic Hall turned out to be a huge success. Over 300 patients were attended to by 9 Taiwanese doctors and three local doctors. Some 30 patients were seen waiting at the venue as early as 7:00 a.m., before the registration counter was opened.

If the following news report is something to go by, the folks at Seri Kembangan were really happy to see such event being held at their neighbourhood. So we have done what we set out to do, only that we did it in flying colours.

We did not bring about world peace, neither did we reverse global warming nor reduce poverty in the world. We the Rotary Club of Sri Petaling did not do any of that, but we managed to bring joy and laughter to a group of young children from various orphanages in town, at least for this one day, and we are proud of it. Like our PDG Ken Khoo mentioned in his speech, the festive season is not only about receiving gifts and well wishes, it is also about giving. This children party was just a small present we gave to the children, to show them that there are people out there who cares.

On the 27th December 2010, RC Sri Petaling, together with RC Ampang, jointly organised an outing specially for a group of 120 children from Angel Home, Ti-Ratana, Sunbeam, Lighthouse and Trinity. We brought them to One Utama Shopping Complex at 10:00 am, provided them with 2 hours of non-stop action at the Starship Galactica Playground. All we heard during that time was nothing but laughter.

At noon, all children were invited to Burger King for lunch. Arranging meal for 120 pax in one goal was never an easy task. Thanks to the Rotary Club members, spouses and the Interactors from SMK Sri Saujana, everyone had a set lunch consisting chicken burger, french fries and drinks after some chaotic moment. Seeing the children happily munching their way over lunch, we shared their moment of satisfaction.

After lunch, it was a long march to the old wing of One Utama, for a Christmas Stage Show specially arranged for the children by the management of One Utama. We were a little early and the show would not start for another hour. Being children as they were, it was hard for them to sit still for such a long period of in-activity. Some Rotarians were fast to respond to situation. An impromptu talent show was quickly arranged. It turned out to be a big surprise for everyone as the children took turns to show off their talent that put many of us to shame. We were treated with Christmas songs, break-dance, guitar playing, somersaults and many more. Our sponsor, Datuk Teo of One Utama made a surprise visit to the stage and joined the fun. He deserved the big round of applause as he was a true Santa of the day by sponsoring the event.

While we were enjoying with the performance, the announcement of the DJ drew the talent show to an end. But not to worry, the next twenty minutes of songs, dance, music and colourful costume pushed the festive mood to a new height. All eyes were glued to the well-choreographed dances with intermittent applause. At the end of the show, every child was given a goody bags, cakes and candies, a little something to remind them of the fun-filled day.

As the event drew to an end, I ushered one group of children back to their bus. A little boy held on to my fingers so tightly along the way and I gave him an assuring grip, leading him through the shopping crowd. Children of young age need someone to hold on to, for direction in life and care. As Rotarians, we will do whatever little we can, even it is just for that 10 minutes walk in their life.

ROTARY INTER-COUNTRY HEALTH CAMP 2011

Rotary Club of Sri Petaling is organizing an Inter-city Health Camp on the 15th January 2011 at the Civic Hall at Sri Kembangan. We bring together 9 specialists from various Rotary Clubs in Taiwan and they will be assisted by a few local doctors.

RC Sri Petaling is hosting this event, and the co-organizer is the RC of Bangsar, Our Sponsoring Media is the Nanyang Siang Pao and China Press

This event is aimed at providing free medical checkups for the lower income group in the vicinity. There will also be other free screening tests like the blood test and blood-pressure measurement.

Festive Children Party at One Utama- 27th December 2010

It is the time of the year when everyone is busy with the festive celebrations, RC Sri Petaling is also getting ready to celebrate the Christmas and New Year with 120 orphans from different homes in Klang Valley. This event is jointly organized with RC of Ampang, with the generous sponsorship from various parties.

The children will be treated to some fun time at the Starship Galactica playground, follow by a lunch at Burger King. The highlight of the day will be a stage show specially arranged by the management of One Utama.

This is just our way to bring some joy to the children on this festive season.

Hari Penyampaian hadiah 11th November'10

11th November 2010, The Community Service Centre of The Deaf invited RC Sri Petaling to attend the "Hari Penyampaian hadiah 11th November'10"

In this function, we were presented a slide show about the centre activities in the year of 2010 and performances entertained by the student such as Martial Art, Line dance & Cultural dance.

There were also Cheques presentation from other NGOs. They also have a birthday celebration party for the Centre Founder Mr Tan Yap for the 94th birthday. We invited to visit the newly install bakery kitchen where was donated by NGOs. And schedule in operation to train the secondary deaf school leavers.

Vocational Visit to the 8th Malaysian Road Conference

A few of the Rotarians from RC Sri Petaling paid a visit to the 8th Malaysian Road Conference on the auspicious day of 10-10-10.

They spent some time at the booth of Jurukur Perunding Services Sdn Bhd to find out more about new technologies such as the satellite images that has the Highest Resolution in the world, which allows you to see the individual car on the road, the GPS system that provides 10-20cm accuracy anytime anywhere, as well as how the underground utilities such as the pipes, cables etc can be detected without having to excavate.

After all the heavy technical stuff, the rotarians adjourned to somewhere more relaxing for fellowship - Mamak Stall!

Gotong Royong With RT OUG - Dangue Awareness Campaign

A Gotong Royong was jointly organized by RT OUG and RC Sri Petaling on the 29 August 2010, with the assistance from the Health Department of DBKL. A total of 10 Rotarian and Anns from RC Sri Petaling, 20 Interactors from SM Sri Saujana Sri Petaling and about 10 members from Rukun Tetangga OUG Zone E and G participated in this project. It started at about 9:30am and everything came to a happy ending at about 12:00 noon.

Due to the recent outbreak of the Dengue fever in OUG (11 reported cases ) , DBKL and the
residents in OUG are very concerned and worried about the situation and therefore Gotong Royong was suggested.

The main aim of the Gotong Royong is to distribute the flyers(checklist of the possible water log areas in the house) from door to door in order to inform and educate the residentson the great importance of eradicating the breeding grounds of the mosquitoes. During the exercise, any unwanted containers could be placed outside of the house for the DBKL trucks to collect.

The selected roads (hot spots) for the Gotong Royong were Jalan Gerimis, Jalan Hujan 8, Jalan Gerimis 1 and Jalan Gerimis 2. The participants were divided into 5 groups, and every group was headed by the members of OUG RT.

The briefing for the Gotong Royong was conducted by Dr. Umi from the Health Department of DBKL. The briefing and gathering point was in the Pondok of Rukun Tetangga OUG.

President BC Khoo and PP Kum Sing were enjoying the walk. Beside them is RTN Chan, as usual busying taking the best shot. PP Kum Sing walked the first time here even though staying few blocks away in the Taman.

Not only the compound of the houses need to be cleaned, but the drains outside also need to be
looked after as well. This drain is clogged in front of a row of houses and the water is not flowing: the best place for mosquitoes to breed. This problem was highlighted to Dr Umi of DBKL and she promised to do something on it. She will call the drainage department to clean up the clogged drain.

Interactors were the helpful lots. After finishing the walk, they wasted no time to clean up the compound of the Rukun Tetangga. A BIG Thank You Interactors for the job well done.

Hopefully with this tiny effort, we may achieved something to struck the heart of the people living in this vicinity to be aware of the seriousness of the Dengue epidemic they are facing now. We must not be disappointed by a few of the residents who gave us the cold shoulder and not responding to our call. We should be proud of ourselves by sacrificing our Sunday morning, standing in the heat of the blazing sun, just for a good deed.

Hatyai Here We Come!

Rotary Club of Sri Petaling is organizing a trip to Hatyai on the 3rd to 6th September 2010. This trip is being planned to coincide with our Friendship Club, Rotary Club of Khok Samedchun's installation, which falls on the 3rd of September.

This 4 days 3 nights event will, not only bring us to many interesting places of visits, but also expose us to some not-so-typical Thai food. That much is promised by our organizer, Rtn Amus Loo.

The 30 seats in the bus were taken up in no time. With such good response from the members and families, it is definitely a good indicator for more trips to come. We are looking forward to all the fun, food and, of course the fellowship, something we hold close to our hearts in RC Sri Petaling.

2010 INTERACT QUIZ CHALLENGE TROPHY

The Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway is organizing the 3rd Inter-School General Knowledge Quiz for Interactors on 25th July, 2010 at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Sunway University College between 8.00am and 1.00 pm. The not-for-profit quiz is intended to help teenagers to expand their general knowledge and encourage them to start taking an interest in topics that might not be covered by school curriculum. We expect more than 150 teams (100 teams participated in the previous event) of Interactors from Forms 3 to 5 to participate in this quiz, which is also an annual event. The main sponsor for the inter-school general knowledge quiz is Sunway University College – contributing about RM 150,000 worth of scholarships. All Participants will receive a certificate of attendance .There will be also prizes for the audience who participate in the quiz.

New Look for RC Sri Petaling News

I have not been doing my job well as the person maintaining the RC Sri Petaling News. So in this new year 2010, I gave it a fresh look. A more environmental friendly design and I sincerely hope everyone likes it.

Feng Shui master says this year, green colour is good for RC Sri Petaling. So I chose green as the background colour. But I think the District Hike @ Bukit Gasing gave me some inspiration to do it.

District Fellowship Hike @ Bukit Gasing Hosted By RC Sri Petaling

7 March 2010, 6:30am, a Sunday morning. While many were still in bed, a group of Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Sri Petaling had already started gathering at PDG Ken Khoo’s Happy Home, a beautiful house with a breathtaking view of Bukit Gasing.

We were busy setting up the reception table, boiling up the water for the refreshment, sorting out T-shirts and caps, unloading mineral water etc. Simply, we just wanted to be ready to receive the guests of the District Fellowship Hike @ Bukit Gasing.

A heavy downpour the night before never dampened our spirit. As a host, RC Sri Petaling, led by IPP Lawrence Kwan, was eagerly waiting for the event to unfold after 4 months of planning.

The first guest arrived at about 6:45am, and soon the reception table was crowded with participants waiting in line to get their names registered and to collect the T-shirt and caps. Our initial worry of a poor turn-out proved to be redundant. At 7:30am, a few minutes to the flag-off time, the number of participants stood at 109, just 13 shy of a full turn out.

The Fellowship Hike @ Bukit Gasing was organized with noble objectives in mind. We want this event to be the platform to foster new friendship and renew old ties among the Rotarians, families and friends. We also brought together the Interactors and Rotractors, just to encourage interactions between the young and the “young-at-hearts”. What was more suitable than a slow hike up the pristine forest in the Bukit Gasing? While everyone had a chance to enjoy the fresh Sunday morning breeze as well as to burn off an extra pound or two gained over the Chinese New Year, we also invited them to show their “Love For Our Mother Earth” by removing all rubbish along the way.

At about 7:15am, our Chief de Tour, Rtn Amus Loo gave a briefing on the “Do’s” and” Don’ts” of the hike. Shortly after that, all participants were divided into 4 teams, each led by an official from the Friend Of Bukit Gasing. Finally at about 7:30am, District Governor Leslie Salehuddin started to flag off the teams at 5 minute intervals.

Even though the hike was expected to be a relaxing trip in the forest, but the safety of the participant was always high on our priority. Thanks to PP Datuk Dr Lee, we had a team of St John volunteers on stand-by. 2 ambulances and 13 volunteers were stationed at strategic locations so that first-aid was within reach when need arises.

We never expected any “casualty” but an hour or so into the hike, the walkie-talkie of a St John officer stationed at the base blared out loud,” …we got the first casualty….. proceed to base and standby to receive the casualty….”.

The air around the base suddenly became abnormally still. All eyes were staring at the main gate, anxiously waiting for the first sign of the ambulance. Minutes later, an ambulance stopped, first-aid personnel rushed to the door, only to see PP Sangar and DGN2 Mansoor coming out of the ambulance with broad smiles on their faces. The “casualty” turned out to be Mansoor’s daughter. She suffered from minor exhaustion. After a few minutes of rest and a packet of nasi lemak, she was all well and smiling again.

One and a half hours into the hike, we started to see the returning participants. They all shared something common. They were all soaking wet with perspiration but smiles were all over their faces. Once they sit down, everyone had his / her version of excitement to share with others. PP Ong Kum Sing complained about the his sore muscles that require some massage, while another Rotarian was overheard saying he did not want to talk to IPP Lawrence Kwan for 2 months for organizing such a demanding hike. Despite what they said, we could only see happy faces. Obviously, everyone had some good memory to bring home to. For the host, that was the most wonderful outcome we can ask for.

Nasi lemak and drinks were served. While some participants were winding down, a sudden commotion at the main gate surprised some. Another “casualty” was being transported back to the base. He was none other than PP Leslie Yeap. When we saw PP Leslie waving his hand to the crowd in a celebrity style, we know he was in no danger. He was just tired and decided to hitch a ride from the returning ambulance.

For every successful activity, there were many people that we need to thank. The task was given to our President Ivy Wong. PDG Ken Khoo and DG Leslie Salehuddin were also there to share some of their thoughts.

The whole event finally came to an end at about 10:45am. A big “Thank You” to the organizing committee and all those who helped make this event a success for RC Sri Petaling.

Fellowship Hike @ Bukit Gasing

Rotary Club of Sri Petaling as host of this District Fellowship event aims to showcase Bukit Gasing as one of the jewel of green lungs in the Klang Valley. The pristine beauty and breathtaking views of the Hill is much sought for as it serves as an escapade from the hustle and bustle of the city life.

This Fellowship event will involve Rotarians and their families as it is a good platform for forging new friendship and also renewing old ties and as such we have not forgotten our younger partners in service namely the Rotaractors and Interactors who are welcome to participate and join the fun.

The routes for the hike have been carefully selected to suit the enthusiasts, the amateurs and the veterans to enable all to complete within 1.5 hours.

While, the hikers are busily enjoying their walk, those non- walkers (spouses and friends) can help to supervise the children art competition where the theme is “Love our Mother Earth”.

We hope that Rotarians from outstation can join us in this event as the date was specially picked - Sunday the 7th March 2010, after the TRF and International Nite and we certainly look forward to seeing you there.

T-shirt will be provided for all the registered participants and those without the T-shirt will not be able to participate.

A Tall Order for PP Sangar Nallappan

Deputy District General Secretary, PP Sangar Nallappan mentioned that our IPP Lawrence Kwan has put it to him that his job as our AG during the last rotary year isn't complete without assisting us get the ROS approval done – that's what PP Sangar has called it a Tall Order from RCSP and have convincingly fulfilled it.

Eight Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Sri Petaling left for Taiwan on the 30th September 2009 with their spouses and friends. Besides visiting hot tourist spots they had a joint meeting with the Rotary Club of Taichung Harbor with the purpose of handing over the donation collected for the victims of Typhoon Morakot which amounted to NT 100,000.

Rotary Club of Sri Petaling would like to thank you all for your generous giving to the Victim’s of Typhoon Morakot. They could not have done it without your help. On behalf of the victims, PDG Tiger Ku has expressed his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all the donors.

A picture paints a thousand words and enclosed are pictures of the joint meeting with Rotary Club of Taichung Harbor, with PDG Tiger Ku receiving the mock cheque after they were treated a sumptuous lunch. At night they were feted to a seafood dinner and handed the actual cash in USD to the President of the Rotary Club of Taichung Harbor.

Inter-Country Meeting at Hadyai (Thailand).

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

For your information, four Rotarians (PP Kum Sing, Amus Loo, PE Khoo Boo Choon and Mantun Choo) representing RCSP went for the 5th Inter-Country Meeting Thailand – Malaysia (District 3330 & District 3300) at BP Samila Beach Hotel & Resort Songkhla Thailand

Date: 19th September 2009 Time: 08.30 am – 22.00 pm

To update what transpired there; we had signed up with a Sister Club (RC of Ladluang,D3330, Thailand, RI Club No: 65717, registered official address at: No.149/2, Moo 8, Soi Sooksawat 72, Sooksawat 7 Rd, T. Bangkru, A.Prapradaeng, Samutprakran Province, 10130, Thailand) as has been pre-arranged by our district level.

The Agreement was signed and sealed in Songkhla, Thailand on the 19th of September 2009 by PP Ong Kum Sing & PE Khoo Boo Choon representing RC of Sri Petaling, RI Club No.73680) and PP Auengfha Peamsawadi & President Jirawat Naraipitak on behalf of RC of Ladluang (RI Club No.65717).

Very soon we should be having a Friendship Club from Hadyai – Miss Emma's Club; whereby PP Kum Sing had known her for many years when he was then with RC Subang.
According to the Sister Club Agreement, the objective are as follows:

1. To develop and promote friendship and mutual understanding between the two clubs;
2. To encourage and organize the exchange of visits either on a group or individual basis between each other;
3. To exchange programs, publications, newsletters, bulletins, magazines, audio, visual and video recordings, photographs, member list and any items of interest between the two clubs, where requested;
4. To assist Rotarians and their family members to contact and correspond between each other, especially within the same classification, profession, occupation, business or vocations.
5. To foster fellowship and service through vocational contacts, meetings and other friendly gatherings;
6. To undertake joint service projects for the benefit of the community in either district;
7. To participate in and undertake programs or activities for the promotion of International friendship, World Understanding, Peace and goodwill through Rotary;
8. To mutually assist members in the two clubs by combining their individual talents and commitment to service and to take steps to strengthen the future of Rotary ant the generations who will continue to serve.

By entering into an Agreement with a Sister Club does not deprive each club the rights of establishing a similar friendship or matched club relationship with another club.

Very soon we should be having a Friendship Club in Hadyai – (Past President) Miss Emma's Club; whereby PP Kum Sing had known her for many years when he was then with RC Subang. Tentatively, early December this year we should be having another trip up to Hadyai for a purposeful Friendship Club discussion or maybe enter into an Agreement.

The date for the 1st talk of the year - 'Chinese Tea’ by our own club Rotarian, Amus Loo was very interesting. It was not an easy task to give this kind of talk because a lot of preparations and accessories to do a demo on “How To Make a Good Brew” .
We must thank him for his willingness, time and effort to share this knowledge with us.

Lantern Festival with Shelter Home, to show our care for the less fortunate

15 Sept 2008, Rotary Club of Sri Petaling together with PDG Ken Khoo and Ann Swan Sim had organized a visit to the Shelter Home 3 atNo.11, Lorong 8/3B, Seksyen 8, PJ, Selangor.

For many of them, this was the first time Rotarians from Sri Petaling were celebrating Lantern Festival with a big group of children.

PDG Ken Khoo brought Famous Satay Kajang Hj Samuri, local fruits and not to forget mooncake for them. Also, we took turn to have photographs taken with the children, merely to be near them was enough to make one feel the peace and love.

The event had come to an end at about 8-9pm. Some were exhausted while others were smiling cheerfully. It was another project well done. We will remember this event as the most unforgettable Lantern Festival!

Thanks to PDG Ken Khoo and Ann Swan Sim for their sponsorship, not to forget our own Rotarians, PE Ivy Law and Rtn Wong KC, Rtn Tina Yap for helping to carry out this project.

Provisional Interact Club at SMK Seri Saujana

A meeting cum training session was carried out with the SMK Seri Saujana Provisional Interact Club on the 6th September 2008. President Lawrence Kwan, Vice President Choo KK, PP Ong K S, Community Service Director Kong HY were there to share some exerience with the Interactors and teacher adviser Pn Chong.

President Lawrence and PP Ong conducted a brief training course on the organisation structure of Interact Club and the responsibilty of various office bearers. It was a fruitful exchange where difficulties were brought up by the teachers adviser and student show tremendous enthusiasm. Looking forward to their presence in the DG visit next week.

The Day When Love Is In The Air

15 June 2008, Rotary Club of Sri Petaling had jointly organized a visit to the Ti Ratana Welfare Society at Salak South with Seremban Chung Hua High School Alumni (KL Branch).

For many people, this was the first time they set foot on any orphanage and old folks home. For all of us, this was the first time we were celebrating fathers' day with a big group of children, many of whom are without fathers. At first I felt it was not a very thoughtful way of putting it. But I was proven wrong, and I would tell you the reason later.

It was a hot event, with strong sun shining upon us, but the enthusiasm of the crowd made the heat less noticeable. Registration of visitors, issueing of passes and touring of the welfare society were all carried out with great efficiency, thanks to all the helpers from CHHS Alumni and cadets from the society.

The visitors were later ushered to the hall where they were greeted with mountains of gifts arranged neatly in front of the stage. Glancing through the items, you would see washing machines, water heaters, food, stationaries, ping pong tables, sofa sets, biscuits and the list can going on and on and on. I was totally overwhelmed, both by the heat of the late afternoon sun, and the generosity of the donors. Bear in mind, for every dollar that came out of the donors' pocket, also accompanied was a heart full of love and care.

The programme started off on time at 2:30pm. The temperature rose in proportion with the size of the crowd. It started off with the all important speeches, to bring out the mood of love. Then come the performances from both the Alumni and The Choir from CHHS. The songs and music that filled the air was what it took to temporary forget the unforgiving scorch.

Next come the performance from the Ti Ratana's very own children, their age ranges from 3 to 4 years to teen age. They did not have nice costumes, neither were their moves well choreographed. Some were shy and others were having hard time keeping up with the rest. All these were not important, what melted my heart and brought tears to my eyes was the little statement from one of the girls, " We dedicated the dance to our beloved father Tan for taking good care of us all the time! Happy Father's Day!"

Yes, money and food would provide them the shelter and carry them through the days without hunger. The orphans need more. In Mr Tan, the person in charge of Ti Ratana Welfare Society, the children found the real need in their young minds. The way Mr Tan hugged and kissed all the children, and the way all the young performers ran toward Mr Tan to share their achievement right after the songs and dances, I felt instantly without doubt, Mr Tan is indeed, their true father. His tender touch on their hair and his little encouragement whispered to their ears before and after each performance brought smiles to all the children.

At that moment, the heat seemed to tone down quite a bit, or may be it did not. It was the love in the air that healed the pain, in you and me, more so in the hearts of those who had no one to turn to.

Ti Ratana founder, Ven. K. Dhammaratana's arrival brought a fresh breeze to the audience. I had the honour to be seated next to him. I hold his hand like a child and felt the warmth coming towards me. I witnessed the children jumped on him, cling on to his chest like a grandson seeking refuge on the grandfather. In this wise man, the children sensed calm and security.

The handing over of the donated items, exchanged of banners and souvenirs, all done in a friendly and joyous mood. While the big crowd broke up for a tea break, more crowd was around the founder. They took turn to have photographs taken with him, merely to be near him was enough to make one feel the peace and love.

After the tea break, children were divided into two groups, each was being taught some cartoon and drawing skills by Rtn Amus Loo's children. This interactive session were meant to get closer to the children and share some personal moment with them.

The event had come to an end at about 5pm. Some were exhausted while others were smiling ear to ear. It was another project well done. I will remember this event as the most unforgettable fathers' day!

It is time for us to re-activate our enthusiasm and get ready for another exciting event:

Visit To Ti Ratana on 15 June 2008

This is a join-event with the Seremban Chung Hwa School Alumni. The visit will take place at 2pm to 5pm at Ti Ratana in Desa Petaling (refer to map attached for location).

The main objective of the project is to generate awareness among the members and to raise some fund and donation for the welfare society. It is part of Rotary Club of Sri Petaling's community service activities to show our care for the less fortunate. Since there will be an expected turn up of about 100 alumni members on that day, we should cease the opportunity to expose them to our Rotary Movement. So your presence is very much appreciated.

The brief programme of the day is as follows:

They also indicated that they urgently need a couple of washing machines to cater for the large volume of laundary on a daily basis.

Roti ayam, however, is a whole 'nother story. It's quite an ingenious creation, really: chicken curry baked in a bag of grease-proof paper that's been tucked inside a huge loaf of bread. This isn't a one-pot meal, it's a one-loaf meal.

But beyond the novelty factor, what does Kampar's roti ayam have going for it? For starters, the curry - red, with plenty of fragrant fresh curry leaves, sour and zesty with chili and a hint of lime - is kick-a**. Big chucks of long-stewed, tender chicken slide right off the bone. And the bread, slightly sweet and eggy (think challah) with a crispy, burnished crust and a tender crumb, is divine on its own, and just this side of heaven dipped in the curry.
I've been pondering the origin of this strange and wonderful treat. Kampar, a mostly Chinese town, also has a fairly large Indian population. Indian curry in a Chinese-style sweet baked dough - here we have the Malaysian ethnic mix on a plate. (I've considered, and discounted, the possibility that roti ayam is distantly related to that most frightening of American mall 'pub' food, chowder in a bread bowl.)
Is Kampar's chicken bread worth a stop on the way to Ipoh or back down to KL? Yes, most definately. I'm fairly certain it's also available to go, to be re-heated, if not baked, in one's home oven. RC Sri Petaling celebrated the Chinese New Year on the 16 February 2008 at the club house of the Bukit OUG Town house. Our PE Lawrence Kwan and Rotarian Amus Loo, being the residents there, offered to organise this event.

The "makan" supposed to start at 6:30pm, but the unexpected downpour at 6pm gave our rotarians excuses to show up late. It never dampened our spirit though. Our Friend of Rotary, Nicholas Chan and family was the earliest at the venue, hoping to go for a dip in the pool. The rain spoilt the plan. Look at the disappointed faces of his daughter told a story or two.

Soon enough, our PE Lawrence Kwan came to our rescue, with all the yummy food and drinks. Looking at the table full of delicious gourmet some how managed to bring back the smiles to the children. We had the KFC, Pizza, the famous Untie Jessie Fry Mee Hoon, Mama Loo Homemade Spaghetti with fresh tomato and mushroom source, not to forget the all so important Amway Yee Sang, courtesy of Rotarian Ivy.

When everyone had satisfied their basic need, we started to look for the "Cina Teh Tarik Man", none other than the Famous Amus Loo. He did the tea magic again with all the probes ready. It proved to be the main attraction of the night.

The other rotarians, their anns and the kids were all having their own clicks to exchange gossips. One of the most shocking revelation of the night was that we had a super loud snorer in the group, ha ha... He only found out on that night why he sometimes woke up with a bruised arm..

Finally, we were ready to toss our Yee Sang. "Low Low Low", may the year of rat bring us properity, health and many more projects!

Yes kid, I know it has passed your bed time. But we were having so much to talk about. All right, may be we should have this more often, and I believe all those who were present would agree with me that the night was really something to remember.

Special thanks to PE Lawrence and Ann, Rotarian Amus Loo and Ann, Rotarian Ivy and hubby for all the delicious dishes. And most importantly, to all those who turned up for making the night more colourful. Well, talk about colour, nobody can beat Rotarian Choo KK on the night with pink Hawaiian outfit.

16 February 2008, A Very Special Day!

The 16 February 2008 was indeed a special day for the RC Sri Petaling, beside being the last Saturday before the end of Chinese New Year.

First of all, we had planned to celebrate the festival with a group of under privileged children from three homes:

Rumah Hope
Rumah Shalom
Precious Children Home

It was the brain child of Rotarian BC Khoo. With his charm and enthusiasm, he managed to secure sponsorship for the event as well as the Chinese New Year T-shirts for all the children. All The Way, Rotarian Khoo! (by the way, he also contributed Ang Pao from his own pocket to all the children, thank you ah!)

On that Saturday morning, we brought with us a group of about 50 children to the MEGA KIDS in Mid Valley to have some fun! They started off with a tattoo session where every child got a tattoo, be it a stock of rose or a cartoon character, painted on the face.

The children were then given their free time to bump around the playground, trying all the slides and games, but under the watchful eyes of the attendants to prevent any untoward incidents.

Smile is contagious. Seeing all the smiling faces made it hard for us not to share their happiness!

While the children were having their share of fun and laughters, the other rotarian were busy getting all the goody bags ready-folding the boxes, fixing the handles and filling them with stationaries. We have to thank Rotarian Choo KK for getting all the gifts and the other rotarians for jumping in and help.

After all the physical work out, all the young girls and boys were ready for some munching. They were served with drumlets, french fries, orange juice, pop corns and many more.

Of course the day would not be complete without some group activities. Childrens were further entertained with more songs and games, not to forget, candies and presents. How we wish we were as energetic as them.

Well, we sincerely hoped the children enjoy as much as we enjoyed ourselves with their company. Before they leave, we gave everyone a goody bag and ang pao, a simple token from the RC Sri Petaling.

For every successful event, there were always people to thank. We take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, the event hosts and all the children and their care takers for bringing so much joy to us. A big THANK YOU!

Oops, I forgot. Thank you all the Rotarians and their family members from RC Sri Petaling.

IPP Tuan Haji's Hari raya Open House

On 7th November 2007, IPP Tuan Haji invited all members to his daughter's house at taman maluri for the Hari raya Open House. Without surprise, there was a big turn out for the event and the traditional delicacies from Haja's kitchen kept everyone busy muching away.

During the meeting after that, IPP's daughter briefed us on some of the courses conducted by Brain Camp which may be useful for our future projects.

Just a little update on the fund raising project. During the District Conference, RC Sri Petaling, together with GOGOPAL managed to sell 14 units of the GOGOPAL PND and thus RM2800 goes towards the KKB Orang Asli school project. On behalf of RC Sri Petaling, I thank all those who have bought the units and not forgeting all those RC Sri Petaling members who have contributed thier effort and time in this project.

Below is a little history about the formation of Terry Fox Run extracted from organizer@terryfoxrunkl.org

Terry Fox was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer. His right leg was amputated above the knee. Whilst in hospital, Terry was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients, particularly children, that he resolved to run across Canada (a distance of 8,500 kilometers) to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the “Marathon of Hope”.
Terry Fox, an amputee, ran a marathon (42 kilometers) a day for 143 consecutive days - a total distance of 5,373 kilometers. At that stage, Terry was forced to abandon his run as the cancer spread to his lungs. Terry Fox died at the tender age of 21. Before he died, he knew that a fund-raising event would be held each year, with the same objectives as the

Marathon of Hope - to help find a cure for cancer.
Since 1981, the Terry Fox Run has raised more than RM1.3 billion in aid

of cancer research around the world.
The Terry Fox run is organized by a volunteer committee comprising individuals and representatives of institutions. All members of the organizing committee are not paid. Institutions supporting the Terry Fox Run include various embassies & high commissions, schools, colleges and universities, companies, statutory bodies, NPOs

Fund Raising Through GOGOPAL Personal Navigation Device

Rotary Club of Sri Petaling had their first contact with Sekolah Kebangsaan Tun Abdul Razak, Kuala Kubu Baru, a national type school which caters to the orang asli school children in 2006. Our Charter President Tuan Haji Nordin happens to have a kampong house in Kuala Kubu Bahru as his retreat and through his contact; Rotary Club of Sri Petaling visited the school. We presented to them a much needed water filter and books for the library. Subsequently, we also donated a tent for the school so that the students do not have to suffer the heat and rain during assembly time.

After visiting the school and talking with the school principal and staff, we discovered that the teachers face a formidable task in getting the students to come to school. School attendance is about 50% for the orang asli children.

We also felt that their poor attendance could possibly be link to some health problem and this contributed to their lack of concentration in class too and this adversely affected their performance in their studies.

This fund raising that we are going to launch focuses on two things.

Education

1. To expose the orang asli students through interesting learning activities that is geared to make learning as a fun activity.

2. To expose them by bringing them to science centers and places of interest like museums.

3. To provided musical instruments and set up a music class in the school for those who have interest but could not afford them.

Health

1. Free health screening by doctors which includes eye checks

2. Health Camp where hygiene are stressed

3. Distribution of vitamins and de-worming tablets

We hope that the proceeds from the sale of the Go Go Pal navigation guide will go a long way to see that these students get a chance in school and later on in life so that they will make a difference in our community.

Our 2nd Installation Night was held on the 10th August 2007. Besides the ceremonial events of handling over the office to the new president and board of directors, there were plentiful more to be remembered of.

This year around, the "scale" of the event was more modest, we had 10 tables in place, but the fun and fellowship was not compromised. After installing the new board, the real fun only begin.

The guests were entertained by a mini-concert, and the performers are no other than our own members, who showed their talent with good selections of English and Chinese numbers. The guests were pleasantly surprised by the skill and showmanship, but most importantly, the members themselves were surprised by their own capability.

Please relive the night with the Hakka Bee Gees, Teresa Teng from Puchong, Emil from Taiwan (restaurant), Amy Wong our MC of the night with her vocal recital, and the star of the night, Nicholas Chan who helped us to raise few hundred ringgit with his solid performances.

I would like to report that Rotary Psychomotor Project is successfully completed and with glad open on the 16 August 2007 by YB Dato' Haji Razali Bin Ismail DPMT, KMN, PJK, who have just return from Taiwan and gave praises to Taiwanese Government for putting lots of effort in Human Resources Development and he especially mentioned a few thanks to Rotary particularly Rotary Club of Panchiao East, Rotary Club of Panchiao West, Rotary Club of Ampang, Rotary Club of Sri Petaling and Rotary Club of Kuala Terengganu. Yes, the Fun Drive n Durian Fest was finally held this morning. After months of anticipation and preparation, it is a relief that it was sucessfully carried out. It went through, not as smooth as we hoped, but nevertheless, it is a job well done by Rotarians from Sri Petaling.

I would like to thank OC Amus Loo for initiating this project with all his contacts, Nicholas for his Fun Drive questions, though it is a pity that one of the answers actually "disappeared", Tang Poh May for all the care she takes to contact the participants, Mrs Wong for the delicious breakfast, Mr Choo for his effort in getting all the printed materials with minimal costs to the club, Mr Lawrence Kwan for offering his help whenever we need, Johnny Kok for handling the registration counter that morning,and all the other Rotarians for taking part in this very special event that sees RM 8800 raised for the benefit of the school children.

Most important of all, I would like to express my gratitude to all the friends, families, collegues, for contributing their money and time for this fund raising event unselfishly. Eventhough there may not be as many Durians as you want, it may not be as exciting as one want it to be, but everyone who was there has to agree that the excitement you brought to the little town of Kg Titi will be remembered....

Rotary Changes Membership Requirements

Council on Legislation changes affecting membership

The 2007 Council on Legislation adopted 97 items, 59 of which were enactments that change the RI constitutional documents. All policy changes take effect on 1 July. Some of the changes that affect membership administration are summarized below. (Each adopted enactment is identified by number so you can easily locate it in the Report of Action.)

ATTENDANCE
07-11: The club board can cancel a club meeting for commonly recognized holidays.
07-14: Club members are required to attend or make up 50 percent rather than 60 percent of regular meetings in each half of the Rotary year.
07-334: Assistant governors are excused from the requirement of attending at least 30 percent of their own club's regular meetings in each half of the Rotary year.
CLUB MEMBERSHIP

07-42: Rotaractors who have ended their Rotaract membership within the preceding two years and have been accepted into a Rotary club are exempt from paying a club admission fee.
07-57 and 07-330: Clubs can elect Rotary Foundation alumni into active membership, even if the classification of the alumnus is filled.
07-329: Clubs can elect into active membership people with good reputations in the community who have demonstrated a commitment to service and the Object of Rotary through personal involvement in local affairs.

DUES
07-283: RI per capita dues will be US$23.50 per half year in 2007-08, $24.00 per half year in 2008-09, $24.50 per half year in 2009-10, and $25.00 per half year in 2010-11. Dues will remain at $25.00 per half year until changed by the Council on Legislation.
07-287: For each new member, clubs will pay prorated per capita dues until the beginning of the next semiannual period for which dues are payable. The amount payable for each full month of membership will be one-twelfth of the per capita dues.
The Manual of Procedure will be updated with all revised constitutional documents and mailed to all clubs and districts. The English version should be available by the end of October, and versions in other languages should be available by March. In the meantime, you can download the complete Report of Action at www.rotary.org.

A karaoke session was arranged on 11 July 2007. It was supposed to be a practise session before the installation night, but it ended up a mini concert of Teresa Tang, Jackie Cheung, Bee Gees, all in one show.

It was really an eye opener for many of us to witness the show of talent from RC Sri Petaling members. One moment, the Bee Gees brought you down the memory lane, the next moment, Teresa Tang smooth-like-silk voice made you wonder for a moment if the voice was actually from the disc and not the mic. All I can say is, you guys were just unbelievable!

Relay for Life - 2 June 2007

Another eventful day for Rotary Club of Sri Petaling and their family members was on the evening of June 2nd, 2007 as they joined others at the MSN Training stadium at Bukit Jalil for the RELAY FOR LIFE(RLF), where everyone in community joins in the fight against cancer. As this was our first appearance at the Relay for Life since our Club’s inception, we were acknowledged by the Emcee as we proudly carried our banner bearing our Club’s name and logo.

This Relay for life is a 16 hours event beginning at 7.30pm on June 2nd to 10.30 am of June 3rd and comes under the umbrella of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia. The campaign’s aim is to raise public awareness about cancer and its cure. Funds raised will go the establishment of a Cancer Screening and Resource centre in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.

The RFL starts with the Survivor’s lap where cancer survivors walk the first lap around the track to celebrate their struggles and victories against the illness. They were followed by other corporations, organizations as well as individuals who want to show their support towards the cause. The night was filled with fun and festivities, shows and games and camaraderie was felt by everyone. Newly crowned Miss Malaysia/World 2007, Deborah Priya Henry was also seen on the track showing her support to a good cause.

OC Rtn Amus Loo indicated that he is expecting 50 to 100 super bikers from BKT club joining the event. Good job!

I come out with a simple poster for the event. I hope you guys like it.

Ok, ok, I admit that it is not wholely my design, my son, Jen Yuan did most of the drawing, I just pieced them together.... Thanks Yuan!

By the way, we are still looking for sponsors for the T-shirts, looks like the number we need will be around 250 pieces. Rtn, please spread the words and make it a FUN FUN TRIP....
